It's the beginning off November, which mean it's time to start those Thankful Turkeys! A thankful Turkey is a way to teach your child how to be thankful for the things in their life. To set up, create a Turkey body using construction paper and scissors and then cut out turkey feathers using different colored construction paper. Each day in November have your child come up with one or two things they are Thankful for and then write them on a turkey feather. If you have littles, write their words for them. If your kids are older, they can write their own feathers. I have found that the less guided this activity is, the more fun the answers are.
The day we start our thankful turkey, we talk about what it means to be thankful and why that is important. Kids have so much to be thankful for, but they may not know exactly what the word "thankful" means or what it feels like to be thankful. So if this is your first time doing this activity, discuss these feelings and start little. Since we started right after Halloween, we talked about how thankful we are to have the opportunity to dress up and go door to door meeting nice people who give us candy. So her first word was candy, which is a great start. We then further the conversation by talking about grandparents, cousins, church, and things that make us happy and how we are thankful God gave us those things. It is such a neat conversation to have with your littles, or even your "olders"! I always loved doing this craft in my kinder classroom, because as the teacher, I was able to see how much my students cared for the things in their lives!
I hope you have so much fun filling out your Thankful Turkey. At the end of the month share a picture of your turkey on Morgan's Home Learning Facebook page! You can always create your own turkey, or you can download a copy of a turkey and feathers by signing up for Morgan's Home Learning Newsletter. I will send a copy straight to your email.
Have fun engaging with your learners!
